Games Like Wordle: 13 Wordle Alternatives to Try
Finished today's Wordle in three and want more? Here are the best Wordle alternatives, from the New York Times' own daily games to Quordle, Waffle, Absurdle and Nerdle, plus five free browser puzzles from CozyWorld.
Starlight Launch gameplay screenshot: lock 1 of 3 in round three, where the guess 1, 2, 8 shows 2 in green with a check, 8 in amber with a dot and 1 in gray, while digit fireflies drift over a lantern-lit meadow and Pip the fox waits by its rocket.
The best games like Wordle are the New York Times' own daily set (Connections, Strands and Spelling Bee), Quordle for four words at once, Waffle for swapping letters into place, Absurdle for a Wordle that fights back, Nerdle for equations and Worldle for country shapes. On CozyWorld, five free browser puzzles scratch the same itch: Starlight Launch uses green and amber clues to crack number codes, Cottage Word Search hides a saying in every grid, Bergamot Parlor 24 deals the same four Make 24 hands to everyone each day, and Sprout Sudoku and Little Stitches each have a new puzzle every day.
Wordle itself belongs to The New York Times. Josh Wardle made it, the Times bought it in January 2022, and the daily puzzle is still free. Nothing on this page is Wordle or affiliated with it. These are games that share one or more of the things people love about it: a small puzzle, clues that narrow the answer, the same challenge for everyone, and a result you can share without spoiling it.
Starlight Launch is the CozyWorld pick to start with if what you love is the colored feedback. Each guess at a 3-digit lock marks a digit green for the right spot, amber for the wrong spot and gray for not in the code, and the gray digits fade from the meadow so you never have to take notes.
The outside games below are described from their official pages and published coverage, not from our own play, so check each page for the details that matter to you.

Featured CozyWorld Games
Start with these free browser games if you want a cozy session without a download or an account. Each card says what kind of play it is, so you can pick the one that fits your mood.
Wordle's colored clues, with numbers
Starlight Launch
Catch fireflies carrying digits to guess a 3-digit lock. Green is the right digit in the right spot, amber is in the code somewhere else, and gray digits fade away. It is a race against Pip the fox, who guesses on a timer, so pause from the toolbar when you want a minute.
A word puzzle with no guesses to ration
Cottage Word Search
Forty-eight themed word searches in four seasonal books. Find every word and the letters left over spell a saying that fits the theme. Grids grow from 8 by 8 to 12 by 12, and the clock only keeps your records.
A daily puzzle with a spoiler-free result
Bergamot Parlor 24
The Make 24 card puzzle: combine four number cards by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing to make exactly 24. Today's four deals the same four hands to everyone on a date, with a result line you can copy that shows no cards or answers.
A daily logic puzzle with hints that teach
Sprout Sudoku
Classic 9x9 sudoku from Gentle to Expert, plus today's sprout, a Medium puzzle that changes every day. Hints explain the next logical step in plain words, and every solved puzzle plants a flower.
A five-minute daily picture puzzle
Little Stitches
Nonograms in a cross-stitch hoop: the counts beside each row and column say which squares to stitch. Today's block is a new 10 by 10 pattern every day that solves one row at a time, with no guessing.
What makes a game feel like Wordle
Wordle's hook is not really the vocabulary. It is four smaller things working together: a puzzle that takes a few minutes, feedback after every guess that turns a vague hunch into a deduction, one puzzle that everyone shares on the same day, and a grid of colored squares you can post without giving the answer away.
The games on this page each keep some of those and change the rest. Quordle and Octordle keep the rules and multiply the boards. Nerdle and Starlight Launch keep the colored clues and swap letters for numbers. Connections, Strands and Spelling Bee keep the daily ritual and change the puzzle entirely. Absurdle keeps the rules and removes the fixed answer, which is either brilliant or infuriating depending on your mood.
If the word part is what you want, start with Spelling Bee, Strands, Waffle or Cottage Word Search. If it is the deduction, try Starlight Launch, Nerdle or Worldle. If it is the shared daily moment, the New York Times games, Bergamot Parlor 24's four hands and the CozyWorld Daily below all reset every day.
The CozyWorld Daily: three puzzles and a share card
CozyWorld has its own daily page at cozyworld.games/daily with three free puzzles that are the same for everyone: today's sprout from Sprout Sudoku, today's hole from Buttercup Links Golf Solitaire (one hand of golf solitaire with a deal that can always be cleared) and today's block from Little Stitches. The page estimates about 15 minutes for all three.
The puzzles change at midnight in your own time zone. When you finish, the page builds a share card with your times and results and a link to the day's puzzles, and no spoilers. A calendar fills in each day you play, and there is no streak to break if you miss one, which is a kinder deal than most daily games offer.
If you would rather learn the rules first, the CozyWorld blog has guides to Cottage Word Search, Starlight Launch, Make 24, sudoku and nonograms.
Quick Picks
The easiest way to choose is to start with the kind of cozy session you want right now: a quick browser game, a longer download, something story-led, or a deeper puzzle or strategy loop. These are the standouts from this guide.

- A word puzzle with no guesses to ration: Cottage Word Search
- A daily puzzle with a spoiler-free result: Bergamot Parlor 24
- A daily logic puzzle with hints that teach: Sprout Sudoku
- A five-minute daily picture puzzle: Little Stitches
- The original daily word guess: Wordle

Choosing between these games
Every pick here shares at least one thing with Wordle: a short puzzle, clues that narrow the answer, or one puzzle a day that everyone shares. Wordle, Quordle, Nerdle, Worldle and Starlight Launch are guessing games with feedback after each guess. Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, Waffle and Cottage Word Search are word puzzles with no guesses to ration. Sprout Sudoku, Little Stitches and Bergamot Parlor 24 are daily logic and number puzzles for when you want a change from words.
If you want something calm, skip Starlight Launch (it is a race, though you can pause it) and Absurdle (it is built to be stubborn). Cottage Word Search, Sprout Sudoku and Little Stitches have no clock against you at all.
CozyWorld publishes the featured browser games. The external recommendations are editorial comparisons based on the linked official descriptions, not claims of firsthand playtesting. Check those pages for current price, platform and availability.
The Best Wordle Alternatives Beyond CozyWorld
Pick 1
Wordle
Best for: The original daily word guess
What it is: Wordle is The New York Times' daily word game. You get six tries to guess a hidden five-letter word, and after each guess the tiles turn green for a right letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter that belongs somewhere else and gray for a letter that is not in the word. Everyone gets the same word each day. The daily puzzle is free, and the archive of past puzzles is for subscribers.
Why it works here: It is the benchmark everything else here is measured against. When the standard game starts to feel routine, its optional Hard Mode makes you reuse every green and yellow letter you have found.
Official pagePick 2
Connections
Best for: Spotting hidden categories
What it is: Connections, also from The New York Times, gives you 16 words to sort into four groups of four that share a hidden category. Each group has a difficulty color, from yellow (the easiest) through green and blue to purple (the hardest), and words that seem to belong together are often split across groups on purpose. The daily puzzle is free.
Why it works here: Choose this when you want a daily word puzzle that rewards lateral thinking more than spelling. It is the second most played New York Times game after Wordle, according to Wikipedia.
Official pagePick 3
Strands
Best for: A themed word search that bends
What it is: Strands is The New York Times' daily themed word search on a six by eight grid of letters, where words can bend in any direction. You get a clue to the theme, and one special answer, the spangram, names the theme and runs between two opposite edges of the grid. Finding three words that are not theme words earns a hint. The daily puzzle is free.
Why it works here: Choose this after Cottage Word Search when you want a word search with a riddle on top: you have to work out the theme before the words come easily.
Official pagePick 4
Spelling Bee
Best for: Building words from seven letters
What it is: Spelling Bee gives you seven letters in a honeycomb and asks for as many words as you can make. Every word must use the center letter and be at least four letters long, letters can repeat, and each puzzle has at least one pangram that uses all seven. Scores unlock ranks up to Genius, and finding every word earns Queen Bee. Wikipedia's coverage of The New York Times Games says free players can play up to an early rank, and the full puzzle needs a subscription.
Why it works here: Choose this when you want a word puzzle you can return to all day, a few words at a time, instead of one that ends in six guesses.
Official pagePick 5
Quordle
Best for: Wordle times four
What it is: Quordle asks you to solve four five-letter words at once with nine guesses, and every guess counts on all four boards. There is a new Quordle each day. Freddie Meyer created it, Merriam-Webster bought it in January 2023, and it is free to play with no account needed. Its harder sibling on the same site, Octordle, asks for eight words in 13 guesses.
Why it works here: Choose this when one Wordle a day is over too fast. Juggling four boards turns every guess into a small strategy question: chase one word, or pick a guess that helps all four?
Official pagePick 6
Waffle
Best for: Swapping letters into place
What it is: Waffle is a daily word puzzle from Waffle Studio, a UK company. All the letters are already on a waffle-shaped grid of words that cross, and you drag them to swap places until every word reads correctly across and down, in 15 swaps or fewer. Letters change color to show whether they are in the right spot, and every swap you have left at the end earns a star. The daily puzzle is free, with extras for supporters.
Why it works here: Choose this when you like Wordle's colored clues but would rather rearrange than guess. Every puzzle can be solved in 10 swaps, so there is a perfect score to chase.
Official pagePick 7
Absurdle
Best for: A Wordle that fights back
What it is: Absurdle, by Sam Hughes (who writes as qntm), looks like Wordle but has no fixed answer. After each guess it keeps every word that still fits and picks the clues that rule out as few as possible, so the answer keeps slipping away. There is no limit on guesses, and the goal is to corner it until only one word remains. It is a free page on the author's website.
Why it works here: Choose this when you want to test your Wordle strategy against an opponent that never gets lucky. It is a puzzle about information more than vocabulary.
Official pagePick 8
Nerdle
Best for: Wordle with arithmetic
What it is: Nerdle replaces the word with a hidden equation. In the daily Classic game you guess a hidden eight-character equation in six tries, and colored clues show how close each guess is. There are smaller and larger versions too, and the site calls it a free online math game, with apps for iOS and Android.
Why it works here: Choose this alongside Starlight Launch or Bergamot Parlor 24 when you want the Wordle loop with numbers instead of letters.
Official pagePick 9
Worldle
Best for: Guessing a country from its shape
What it is: Worldle shows the outline of a mystery country or territory and gives you six guesses. Each wrong guess tells you the distance to the answer, an arrow pointing toward it and a proximity percentage. A new puzzle arrives every day at midnight your time. The daily game is free in a browser, and the archive and some extras need a paid Premium membership.
Why it works here: Choose this when you want Wordle's hot-and-cold deduction with a map instead of a dictionary. It is a good one to share with the friend who always knows where Moldova is.
Official pageWhich One Should You Play First?
Start with Starlight Launch if Wordle's green and amber clues are the part you love, Cottage Word Search if you want words without rationing guesses, and Bergamot Parlor 24, Sprout Sudoku or Little Stitches if you want a fresh puzzle every day with nothing to pay.
Beyond CozyWorld, Wordle, Connections and Strands make a free daily trio, Spelling Bee is the one to nibble at all day, Quordle is Wordle with four boards, Waffle is the swap puzzle, Absurdle is the contrarian, and Nerdle and Worldle bring numbers and maps into the mix.
