Cozy Classic
Cottage Word Search
Forty-eight themed word search puzzles through a year at the cottage, each with a saying hidden in its leftover letters.
What you do
A cozy word search game in four seasonal puzzle books: Spring Cottage, Summer Garden, Autumn Harvest and Winter Hearth, twelve puzzles each. Every puzzle has a theme, like Tea Party, Rainy Afternoon, Farmers Market, Knitting Basket, Apple Picking or Snow Day, and a list of 9 to 16 words that belong to it. Drag across a word, or tap its first and last letters, and a soft colored capsule marks it in the grid. There are no random filler letters: every letter belongs to a listed word or to a hidden saying. Once you find the last word, the letters left over light up one by one and spell a saying that fits the theme, like “Many hands make light work” for spring cleaning or “Home is where the hearth is” by the fire. The grids grow through the year, from 8 by 8 with words that read across and down, through diagonals in summer and backwards words in autumn, to 12 by 12 grids in winter where words run in all eight directions. Every book is open from the start, a gentle hint circles the first letter of a word when you are stuck, and the timer only keeps your best time. Your puzzles save on this device, so you can stop halfway and pick up where you left off.
- Forty-eight themed puzzles in four seasonal books: Spring Cottage, Summer Garden, Autumn Harvest and Winter Hearth.
- A hidden saying in every grid. There are no filler letters: once every word is found, the leftover letters spell a cozy saying that fits the theme.
- Directions grow through the year: across and down in spring, diagonals in summer, backwards words in autumn and all eight directions in winter, on grids from 8 by 8 to 12 by 12.
- Drag across a word or tap its first and last letters, with selections that snap to the puzzle’s directions, plus a full keyboard mode.
- Gentle hints, a timer that only keeps your best time, and saved progress for every puzzle on this device.
How to play
- Press Start the first puzzle, or Continue to pick up where you left off. The books button opens all four puzzle books, and any puzzle can be played in any order.
- Each puzzle has a theme and a list of words hidden in the grid. Drag from the first letter of a word to its last in a straight line, or tap the first letter and then the last. A word can be selected from either end.
- A found word gets a soft colored capsule and is struck through in the list. A line that is not a listed word fades away, with no penalty.
- The line under the grid shows which directions are in play. Spring Cottage words read across and down. Summer Garden adds diagonals that read left to right. Autumn Harvest adds words that read right to left or bottom to top. Winter Hearth uses all eight directions.
- Every letter in the grid belongs to a listed word or to the hidden saying. Find every word, and the letters left over, read left to right and top to bottom, spell a saying that fits the theme.
- Stuck? Hint circles the first letter of the first word in the list you have not found yet. The timer and hints are only kept as your records: there are no penalties and no lives.
Controls
- Mouse or touch: drag across a word, or tap its first letter and then its last. Tap a marked first letter again to clear it.
- Keyboard: the arrow keys move a cursor, Enter or Space marks the first letter and then the last, Escape cancels, and H gives a hint.
- The books button picks any puzzle. The toolbar has pause, help, restart (which clears only this puzzle’s found words, hints and time), optional sound and fullscreen.
Tips worth knowing
- Look for the rare letters first. A Q, Z, X, J or K stands out in a grid, so a word like ZUCCHINI or QUILT is quick to spot.
- Doubled letters are easy to find too: the LL in UMBRELLA, the PP in POPPY or the OO in BROOM.
- Scan one direction at a time. Read every row, then every column, and in the later books every diagonal and every row backwards.
- Find the long words first. They cross more of the grid, and once they are marked the short words have fewer places to hide.
- Near the end, only the letters without a capsule matter: they are the words you still need plus the hidden saying.
Accessibility
- Everything can be played with a keyboard: the arrow keys move a cursor, Enter or Space marks the first and last letters, Escape cancels, H gives a hint, and every button is reachable with Tab.
- Nothing is timed against you. The clock only records your time, it stops while the game is paused or the tab is hidden, and there are no lives.
- Large capital letters in a rounded font. Found words are struck through in the list as well as marked in the grid, and the directions in play are written under the grid next to a small compass.
- Reduced motion shows the hidden saying all at once instead of letter by letter and turns off the hint pulse and card animations.
- Sound is optional and never needed to play.
Questions
What is the hidden saying?
Every puzzle hides a short saying that fits its theme. There are no random filler letters: every letter is part of a listed word or part of the saying. When you find the last word, the leftover letters, read left to right and top to bottom, light up in order and the saying is written out under the grid.
Do I have to play the books in order?
No. All four books and all 48 puzzles are open from the start. The books get bigger and use more directions as the year goes on, so Spring Cottage is the gentlest place to begin, and finished puzzles show a check mark with your best time.
What does Cottage Word Search save?
On this device it saves each puzzle you have started (the words found, the hints used and the time so far), each puzzle you have finished with its best time and fewest hints, and the puzzle you opened last. Restarting from the toolbar clears only the puzzle you are playing; finished puzzles and records stay.
How long does a puzzle take?
It depends on the puzzle and the player. A spring grid has 9 to 12 words on 8 by 8 or 9 by 9 letters, and a winter grid has up to 16 words on 12 by 12. We have not timed real players, so the length shown on this page is our estimate. The timer only keeps your best time, and nothing happens when it runs long.
