The best cozy gardening games let you watch something grow without a single dead plant to feel bad about. Six are free in your browser on CozyWorld: CozyWorld Village, where you plant and water a cottage garden and a raised bed at the village allotment, Lucky Little Garden, Beehive Bloom Defense, Moonbeam Garden, Harvest Grid and Cozy Peaks Solitaire. For a garden to keep, Garden Life, The Garden Path, Cloud Gardens, Botany Manor and Viridi are the picks most worth a look, and the table below compares them all.

CozyWorld Village is the one to start with if you want to dig, sow and wait. Your cottage has six garden plots in front: tap a plot to plant, hold to water and tap the bloom to pick it. Plants grow in real time through four stages, seed, sprout, bud and bloom, and watering a stage doubles its speed, so sweet peas bloom in about twelve minutes and the slowest flowers in forty-eight. Nothing wilts or dies, and everything keeps growing while you are away, up to its bloom.

Behind the cottages is the village allotment, where every house has a raised bed of its own. A bed of flowers gives twice what a garden plot does, and carrot, zucchini, pumpkin and potato seeds grow only there, for Oliver to bake into carrot cake, zucchini bread, pumpkin muffins and potato rolls. Anyone in the village can water anyone's bed, so a friend who joins by link can water yours.

The other garden games on CozyWorld are quieter and shorter, from a seed-combining puzzle to a moonlit mirror puzzle. The paid and free-to-try games below come from their Steam store pages, not from our own playtesting, so check each page for the details that matter to you.

Tending, defending or puzzling?

Pick CozyWorld Village when you want to tend: dig, plant, water, wait and pick, with a book to fill. Pick Lucky Little Garden when you want to plan: every seed changes what the garden can become, and a single watering can beside the right plant can be the most valuable piece on the board. Pick Harvest Grid when you want a puzzle with a ripening clock, and Cozy Peaks Solitaire when you want the garden to be a reward for a good hand.

Beehive Bloom Defense is the garden game with enemies, though they are beetles, aphids, crows and moles. Moonbeam Garden is the one with no plants to look after at all: you wake the flowers by bending light, and undo is free.

Several other CozyWorld games take place in a garden without being about gardening: Garden Gnome Guard, Garden Putt, Tag-Along Pup, Hollyhock Math Path and Sprout Sudoku. They suit a garden mood, but they do not grow anything, so they are not on the list above.

Growing in real time or in your own time

Some gardens grow on the clock and some wait for you. In CozyWorld Village, flowers grow in real time and keep going while you are away, so you plant, do something else and come back to a bloom. Viridi's Steam page says its succulents grow in real time, and The Garden Path's page says its four seasons pass in 28 real-world days.

Lucky Little Garden, Moonbeam Garden and Cozy Peaks Solitaire have no clock at all, and Garden Life's page says you plant at your own pace and that all plants thrive no matter the time of year. Pick the first kind for something to check in on, and the second for a garden that never needs you.

Quick Picks

The easiest way to choose is to start with the kind of cozy session you want right now: a quick browser game, a longer download, something story-led, or a deeper puzzle or strategy loop. These are the standouts from this guide.

Choosing between these games

Choose by how much you want to look after. The Village and Viridi are gardens you check in on, Lucky Little Garden, Moonbeam Garden and Cozy Peaks Solitaire are over when the game is, and Garden Life and The Garden Path sit in between with tasks and visitors.

Choose by how you like to play. For a quiet few minutes try Moonbeam Garden or Harvest Grid, for a garden to share go to the Village, and for a long stay with a grid-free design try Garden Life.

The Best Cozy Gardening Games Beyond CozyWorld

Pick 1

Garden Life: A Cozy Simulator

Best for: Designing a garden with no grid

What it is: Garden Life is a relaxing gardening game in which you turn an overgrown, forgotten plot into a flourishing community garden. The Steam page says you plant seeds with room to thrive, water, fertilize and clip, pull weeds or leave some to protect plants from pests, and place plants and objects freely rather than on a grid. It lists a story mode with tasks from neighbors and a creative mode that unlocks every seed and ornament.

Why it works here: Choose this after the Village when you want to design the garden as well as grow it. The store page says plants grow procedurally, and some climb nearby objects.

Pick 2

The Garden Path

Best for: Short visits to a garden that follows the clock

What it is: The Garden Path is a slice-of-life gardening sim made to be played in short bites. The Steam page says time runs in step with the outside world, so all four seasons pass in 28 real-world days, and that vegetable-headed visitors, traveling merchants and tasks fill each day. It lists single-player and shared or split-screen co-op.

Why it works here: Choose this when you like the Village's real-time growth and want a bigger garden with its own cast. It suits a few minutes a day.

Official page

Pick 3

Cloud Gardens

Best for: Overgrowing scenes in a sandbox

What it is: Cloud Gardens is a chill game about using plants to overgrow abandoned wasteland dioramas. The Steam page lists a relaxing sandbox mode with no goals and a multi-chapter campaign, an enormous catalog of objects and plants, and a way to download looping videos of your finished scenes.

Why it works here: Choose this for gardening as a creative toy rather than a routine. It has no crops or orders, so it pairs well with Moonbeam Garden's calm.

Official page

Pick 4

Botany Manor

Best for: Growing plants by solving clues

What it is: Botany Manor is a first-person puzzle game set in a Victorian English manor in 1890. You play botanist Arabella Greene, exploring the house and grounds for clues to the ideal conditions for rare plants and then growing each one from seed. The Steam page calls it a relaxing and peaceful environment.

Why it works here: Choose this when the part of gardening you like is working out what a plant needs. It is a puzzle game with a fixed set of plants rather than a garden you keep.

Official page

Pick 5

Viridi

Best for: A pot of succulents on your desktop

What it is: Viridi lets you nurture a small pot of succulents that grow in real time. The Steam page suggests leaving it open in a second window while you work, warns that the succulents can die from over- or under-watering although they are forgiving, and says the game is free to try, with extra plants bought from the in-game nursery for a few cents each.

Why it works here: Choose this when you want one small plant to check on rather than a whole garden. It is free to try.
