How to play
- Press Play today’s Daily 10, or choose Topic quizzes. Each quiz is ten questions with four answers each, and exactly one answer is right.
- Tap or click the answer you think is right. It is marked at once: sage with a tick if you have it, terracotta if not, with the right answer marked beside it.
- Read the one-line why under the answers, follow the source link if you want more, then press Next question. After the tenth, you get your score, a word from Thaddeus and a review of all ten.
- The Daily 10 counts once a day. Finish it on consecutive days to grow your streak; a day without one starts the streak again. A Daily 10 left unfinished is set aside at midnight.
- Topic quizzes can be played as often as you like. Each one deals the next ten from that topic’s shuffled deck, and the best score and the share you got right are kept for every topic.
Controls
- Touch or mouse: tap an answer to pick it, then Next question. Quizzes, at the top of the board, goes back to the list of quizzes, and a quiz in progress is kept.
- Keyboard: 1 to 4 or A to D pick an answer, the arrow keys move between the answers and Enter picks the one in focus. After answering, Enter or N goes to the next question. Escape goes back to the list of quizzes or closes a card.
- Restart in the toolbar deals ten new questions in a topic quiz, or goes back to the list of quizzes. The toolbar also has pause, help, optional sound and fullscreen.
What you do
Saltbox Harbor Trivia is a general knowledge quiz night in the back room of the Saltbox, a harborside pub at dusk. Through the sash window the lighthouse on the point has just come on, two boats ride at their moorings and the saltbox houses across the water have their lamps lit. Behind the oak counter stands Thaddeus, a brown pelican in an ink-blue fisherman’s sweater with brass half-moon glasses on his bill, who reads each question off a card, nods when you have it and raises a brow when you do not. The quiz sheet is pinned to an oak board on the counter. Every day brings the Daily 10: ten questions, at least one from each of the eight topics, the same for everyone on that date, with a streak for each day in a row you finish it. Any time, you can play ten from one topic (Food and Cooking, Nature and Animals, World Geography, History, Science, Words and Language, Sports and Games, or Arts) or ten from the whole bank. Each question has four answers, and after you pick one the right answer is marked, with a one-line why and a link to the Wikipedia article the question was checked against. There is no clock, and nothing to buy.
- The Daily 10: ten new questions every day, the same for everyone on that date, with at least one from each of the eight topics. Finish it on consecutive days to build a streak; your best streak and best daily score are kept.
- Topic quizzes of ten in Food and Cooking, Nature and Animals, World Geography, History, Science, Words and Language, Sports and Games, and Arts, or ten from the whole bank. Each topic deals from its own shuffled deck, so you see the rest of a topic before a question comes round again.
- 724 evergreen general knowledge questions, each checked against the Wikipedia article it links to: the answer and the line on why come from a passage of that article.
- A one-line why after every answer, with the source one tap away, and a review of all ten at the end of each quiz.
- Saved on this device: your streak, the last seven days, your best score and accuracy for each topic, every quiz in progress, and the decks, so a reload picks up where you left off.
- Thaddeus, a calm brown pelican quizmaster, in a harbor pub’s back room drawn in code, with quiet sounds and no timer.
Tips worth knowing
- Rule out the answers you know are wrong first. Taking a four-way guess down to two doubles your chances.
- Read the whole question, especially words like largest, first, only and not. Most near misses in a quiz come from answering a slightly different question.
- Look inside the words. Word origins and the names of things often carry the answer, and the Words and Language topic rewards it most.
- Play the Daily 10 first each day. It counts once, and it keeps your streak; the topic quizzes can wait.
- Read the why even when you are right. The same facts turn up in other questions, and the reason is easier to remember than the answer alone.
- Use a topic quiz to practice your weakest subject. The Scores card shows the share you get right in each one.
Accessibility
- Everything can be played with a keyboard: 1 to 4 or A to D pick an answer, the arrow keys move between answers, Enter or N goes to the next question and Escape goes back.
- Right and wrong are shown by a tick or a cross as well as by color, and the result is read out to screen readers with the line on why.
- Nothing is timed, and a quiz can be left and picked up later.
- Reduced motion keeps Thaddeus still and the feedback small. Sound is optional and never needed to play.
Questions
Is the Daily 10 the same for everyone?
Yes. The ten questions for a date are worked out from the date alone, so everyone playing on that day gets the same ten, in the same order, with the answers in the same order. A new set starts at midnight on your device.
How often do questions repeat?
In our own simulation of the game’s Daily 10 over two years of days, no question appeared twice in the first 66 days, the shortest gap between two appearances of the same question was 66 days, and every one of the 724 questions had appeared by day 82. In the same simulation of the topic decks, a question was never asked again within 42 questions of the same topic, and never twice in one quiz.
Where do the questions come from, and how are they checked?
Every question was written for this game and checked against a Wikipedia article, which the question links to after you answer. The right answer and the line on why had to appear in a passage of that article, the passage and the revision of the article that was read are stored with the question, and a question that could not be confirmed that way was left out.
How does the streak work?
Your streak is the number of days in a row you have finished the Daily 10, whatever the score. It still counts on a day you have not played yet, so you have until midnight to keep it going. Miss a day and it starts again from your next Daily 10. Your best streak is kept.
What would I score by guessing?
In our own simulation of 100,000 Daily 10 quizzes answered completely at random, the average score was 2.5 out of 10, a score of 5 or more came up 7.8% of the time, and ten out of ten never did.
What does the game save?
Your Daily 10 scores by date for the streak (the last 400 days), your best streak and best daily score, every topic’s quizzes played, best score and share right, the quiz in progress and each topic’s place in its deck, all in this browser’s local storage. There is no account.
