How to play Quince Garden Snake

The classic snake game on the lawn of a walled kitchen garden. Steer the snake to the fruit, grow a square longer with every bite and keep clear of the wall and your own tail, while Fenwick the ferret watches over his tea.

1. Choose a mode, a lawn size and a speed, then press Play. The snake waits, three squares long and facing right, until you give it a direction.
2. Press an arrow key, swipe or tap the arrow pad to set off. From then on the snake keeps moving one square at a time in the direction it is facing, and you choose where it turns: up, down, left or right. It can never turn straight back on itself.
3. Steer the head onto the fruit. Each fruit scores one point and makes the snake one square longer, and a new fruit appears on a free square.
4. In Classic and Daily, the round ends if the head runs into the wall or into the snake’s own body. Moving into the square the tail is just leaving is allowed. In Wrap, the edges lead round to the opposite side, so only your own body ends the round.
5. In Calm, running into your own body costs three segments from the tail and a short rest, and the round goes on. It ends only when a bump would leave the snake shorter than three squares, or when you choose Finish round in the menu, which ends any round and keeps its score. Fill the whole lawn in any mode and you have won outright.

Controls

• Keyboard: the arrow keys or W, A, S and D steer. Escape opens the menu, which pauses the round.
• Touch: swipe anywhere in the garden; a turn fires as soon as your finger has moved far enough, and you can keep going in one stroke to make several turns. The arrow pad below the lawn does the same with taps, and can be turned on or off in Settings.
• Mouse: drag in the direction you want to go, or click the arrow pad when it is shown.
• If you switch to another tab or window, the snake stops where it is and waits for your next arrow. The toolbar has pause, help, restart, optional sound and fullscreen.
