How to play Cattail Landing Tic Tac Toe
Classic tic tac toe and ultimate tic tac toe on an oak board on a lakeside porch at dusk, against Percival the crane at three levels, or a friend on the same device.
- Press Play. On the title card choose Classic or Ultimate, and Percival or two players. By default you play X and go first, against Gentle Percival at classic.
- Classic: tap an empty square to place your mark. X and O take turns, one mark each. The first to get three in a row, across, down or corner to corner, wins. If all nine squares fill with no three in a row, the game is a draw.
- Ultimate: the board is nine small boards in a 3 by 3 grid. The first move can go in any of the 81 squares. After that, the square you mark sends the reply to the small board in the same position: mark the top right square of a small board and the next move must be in the top right board. The boards you may play in have a lamplight edge.
- Three in a row on a small board wins that board, and it counts as your mark on the big board. A small board that fills with no three in a row is tied and counts for nobody. If you are sent to a board that is won or full, you get a free move in any open board.
- Win three small boards in a row on the big board to win ultimate. If every board is decided with no such line, it is a draw. Start a new game from the menu, or change the game, the mode and Percival’s level in Settings.
Controls
- Touch or mouse: tap a square to mark it. In ultimate, a tap outside the boards you are sent to gives a small shake and says where to play. Undo, Hint and Menu sit on the shelf below the board, or beside it on a wide screen.
- Keyboard: the arrow keys move between the squares, and Enter or Space marks the square in focus. In classic the number keys 1 to 9 mark that square, counting across from the top left; in ultimate they mark that square of the board you are sent to. U undoes, H shows a hint, and Escape clears a hint or closes a card.
- Restart in the toolbar starts a new game. Menu starts a new game, opens Settings (the game, Percival or two players, his level and who goes first) and shows your statistics and the rules. The toolbar also has pause, help, optional sound and fullscreen.
